Not in a City : A humpback whale can easily be identified by its stocky body with an obvious hump and black dorsal coloring. The head and lower jaw are covered with knobs called tubercles, which are hair follicles, and are characteristic of the species.Humpbacks frequently breach, throwing two-thirds or more of their bodies out of the water and splashing down on their backs. Over time, falling snow piles up in mountain recesses, and ever so slowly the weight of accumulating snow compact lower layers into dense ice.
